BROMIO ISSUE #5

Secondo l’antropologo Tim Ingold il passato è davanti ai nostri occhi e il futuro è alle nostre spalle. Non un’immagine astratta ma la descrizione di come si muovono le culture, i corpi, le tradizioni: il passato è ciò che vediamo perché è già stato percorso, il futuro è ignoto perché ci viene incontro da dietro, senza preavviso, da dove non è
possibile guardare. Accogliere questa prospettiva significa riconoscere che il passato non si insegue, lo possiamo osservare mentre viviamo e, dunque, non ha bisogno di essere salvato attraverso avventurose azioni protettive. Possiamo, al limite, preservarlo dall’aggressione dell’incuria e dalla trascuratezza.

According to the anthropologist Tim Ingold, the past lies before our eyes and the future behind our backs. Not an abstract image, but a description of how cultures, bodies and traditions move: the past is what we can see because it has already been travelled through; the future is unknown because it approaches us from behind, without warning, from a place we cannot look towards. To embrace this perspective means recognising that the past is not something to be chased after: we can observe it while we live and, therefore, it does not need to be saved through adventurous acts of protection. At most, we may preserve it from the aggression of neglect, from carelessness.
